Mistral raises EUR 3 billion, Europe’s biggest tech funding round

Archive · Issue of 11 September 2026

What happened

On 8 September 2026 the French AI company Mistral announced it had raised EUR 3 billion at a valuation of more than EUR 21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads. TechCrunch described it as the largest equity round ever raised by a European technology company. Mistral says it will spend the money on research, computing capacity and international growth, and aims to build 1 gigawatt of European computing capacity by 2030.

Why it matters for your business

Mistral sells itself on “sovereign” AI: models and infrastructure that keep data under European control rather than with US providers. It says it works in 20 countries and with more than 125 large enterprises, including Airbus and HSBC.

For a small Swiss firm, the money itself changes nothing this week. What it does mean is that a serious European alternative to OpenAI, Google and Anthropic is likely to stay around. That matters if your clients ask where their data goes, or if you don’t want every AI tool you use to come from the US.

Mistral’s assistant, Le Chat, has a Team plan for small businesses.

Update, October 2026: Mistral’s pricing page now calls the assistant Vibe. Its Team plan is listed at USD 24.99 per user per month (minimum USD 50 per month), about CHF 20.70 per user, approximate (Mistral pricing). Prices may display differently from Switzerland.

The Swiss angle

Mistral is available in Switzerland and its models handle German, French and Italian. Being European is not the same as being Swiss-hosted: Mistral’s pricing page did not state where data is stored. If Swiss or EU hosting is your reason to choose it, get the data location in writing before you sign.

What to do

If you are choosing an AI assistant for your team this autumn, add Mistral to your shortlist next to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot. Ask each vendor the same three questions: where is our data stored, is it used for training, and what does it cost per user in CHF?
