Google Meet can now take notes in meetings around a real table

Archive · Issue of 14 August 2026

What happened

On 13 August Google announced that Gemini’s “Take notes for me” now works for in-person meetings, not only video calls (Google Workspace Updates). You open Google Meet on your phone or computer and tap Take notes on the home screen. Gemini listens through the device’s microphone. Afterwards you get a Google Doc in Drive with a summary, action items and a transcript, plus an email with the link.

The rollout started on Android on 11 August, with the web from 14 August and iPhone from 31 August at the earliest.

Why it matters for your business

Plenty of important conversations in a small business never happen on video: the site visit, the supplier meeting in your office, the quarterly review with your Treuhänder. Until now, AI notes only covered online calls. Now a phone on the table can produce minutes and a to-do list.

The time saving is real if someone currently writes up those meetings. But a phone recording a room is also easy to forget about. People who join late or sit at the far end may not realise they are being recorded.

The Swiss angle

The feature is included in Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus, plus Enterprise editions and Google AI Pro and Ultra. Business Starter does not get it (Google Workspace Updates). Google’s announcement does not list supported languages, so check how it copes with your meetings in German, French or Italian. Swiss German is a separate question.

Recording a private conversation without the consent of everyone in it can be a criminal offence in Switzerland (Swiss Criminal Code, Art. 179bis and 179ter, Fedlex). The transcript is also personal data under the Data Protection Act, so you must tell people it’s being made and what it’s for.

What to do

If you’re on Business Standard or above, try it once in an internal meeting. Make one rule from day one: say it out loud before you tap the button (“I’m turning on AI notes, is everyone OK with that?”) and stop if anyone objects. Your admin can switch the feature on or off in the existing Google Meet notes settings.
