Switzerland sets the course for its 2027 AI summit in Geneva

Archive · Issue of 14 August 2026

What happened

On 12 August the Federal Council set the direction for the Geneva AI Summit 2027 and appointed Fabiola Gianotti, CERN’s director-general from 2016 to 2025, as its delegate to prepare it (Federal Council). The theme is “Bridging Innovation and Trust”. The main event is budgeted at about CHF 6 million. Governments, international organisations, universities, business and civil society will take part. Swissinfo reports the summit is planned for June 2027 (swissinfo).

Why it matters for your business

A summit won’t change your Monday. What it signals is useful: the Federal Council wants AI to be seen as a driver of prosperity and as something people can trust. That matches its approach to regulation so far.

Switzerland has no AI law yet. In February 2025 the Federal Council decided to bring the Council of Europe’s AI Convention into Swiss law, with a sector-by-sector approach plus non-binding measures. The Federal Department of Justice is to prepare a consultation draft by the end of 2026, covering transparency, data protection, non-discrimination and oversight (OFCOM).

In the meantime, the Data Protection Act already applies to AI. The Federal Data Protection Commissioner says it is “technology-neutral” and covers AI-supported data processing directly (FDPIC).

The Swiss angle

The whole story is Swiss, so here is the practical reading for an owner. The rules you need today are the data protection rules you already have, plus the EU AI Act if you sell into the EU. The consultation draft due by the end of 2026 is the next thing that could add new duties, and a consultation is where businesses and their associations get to comment.

What to do

Nothing yet. Watch for the Federal Department of Justice’s consultation draft, due by the end of 2026. Until then, get the basics right under the Data Protection Act: know which AI tools your team uses, and what data goes into them. This issue’s guide walks you through it.
